Short answer: choose a narrow group of past customers who had a reason to come back, send a short personal message with a real reason to return, handle every reply quickly, and count bookings from that group only.

Why past customers are worth your time

A past customer already knows your work, your prices and how to reach you. Winning them back is often easier than winning a stranger. Yet most businesses never contact them again after the last job.

Step 1: pick the right group

Do not message everyone. Start with customers who:

  • Had a completed job or purchase between about 6 and 18 months ago.
  • Have not booked since.
  • Have not opted out of messages.
  • Bought a service people usually need again.

The exact window depends on your business. A lawn care company might use a shorter window. A roofing company might not have repeat work at all, and could focus on referrals instead.

Step 2: give them a reason to return

A reason to return does not have to be a big discount. Good options include:

  • A seasonal reminder, such as getting on the spring schedule early.
  • A small add-on included with the next booking.
  • A simple check-in asking how things are going since the last job.

Deep discounts can train customers to wait for deals. A useful reminder often works just as well.

Step 3: send short, personal messages

Keep it short and write like a person. One message and one follow-up is often enough.

Hi Sam, it has been a while since we cleaned your car. Spring is a busy time for us, so I wanted to check in early. If you want to get on the schedule, reply here or grab a time with the link below.

Only use channels you have permission for. If customers gave you an email address for receipts, that is not always permission for marketing texts.

Step 4: handle every reply

Replies will fall into a few groups:

Reply typeWhat to do
InterestedSend a booking link or call them back the same day
QuestionA person answers
Not nowThank them and note when to check in again
Opt outRemove them right away

A comeback campaign that gets replies but leaves them unanswered for days loses most of its value.

Step 5: measure the right thing

Count results from the group you contacted, during a set period, such as 30 days.

What it takes from you

You will need a customer export or access to your records, approval of the offer and messages, and time to respond to interested customers. The campaign itself can be set up and run for you.

If you are not sure your customer list is usable, a free opportunity assessment is a good place to find out.
